ASTORINO
PLEDGES TO ELIMINATE NON-ESSENTIAL"PRIVATE-USE" CARS IN
WESTCHESTER COUNTY GOVERNMENT
Calls on Andy Spano to
Release List of Taxpayer-Funded
"Perk" Cars Now in Use
White Plains, NY-April 22 Westchester
County Executive candidate Rob Astorino, who is running for County
Executive to reduce the tax load on Westchester families by
consolidating government and eliminating waste, today pledged that he
will end the practice of handing out taxpayer-funded "perk
cars"-and gas to go along with them-to staff members and
political appointees.
Mr. Astorino said he will establish a zero-baseline policy on
taxpayer-funded vehicles: No one gets one unless he or she can prove
an essential government need.
"Taxpayer-funded vehicles have become perks in County government
and it has to stop," Mr. Astorino said. "Westchester
residents are having enough trouble making their own gas and car
payments to have to foot the bill for Mr. Spano's friends and
deputies. Perk cars are yet another example of County
government running amok with our money."
Mr. Astorino called upon County
Executive Spano for a full accounting of how many cars are now being
taken home each day by county employees.
"This administration has a
history of hiding information from the public, only making it
available when forced to by law." Mr. Astorino continued.
"It shouldn't take a Freedom of Information Law request to
ascertain how Mr. Spano is spending our money. The public deserves to
know how many perk cars they are paying for and why each of those
vehicles is needed."
